In a bid to advance peace talks amid the ongoing conflict with Russia, US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff visited Kyiv on Sunday for discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This meeting followed their earlier engagement with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. Witkoff characterized the talks with Zelenskyy as “very constructive and substantive,” expressing optimism about potential broader discussions that could include the US, Ukraine, and European countries.
National security advisers from the UK, France, and Germany made brief appearances during the Kyiv discussions. Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s desire to facilitate trilateral talks with the US and European partners to further peace negotiations. As the country braces for another harsh winter, Zelenskyy also appealed for sustained Western support, highlighting the need for air defense enhancements, energy assistance, and increased shipments of US liquefied natural gas.
The efforts to reach a peace agreement face significant hurdles, particularly over the contentious issue of territorial control in eastern Ukraine. Previous discussions have revolved around a 20-point peace framework proposed by Washington and Kyiv. However, critical disagreements have prevented Russia and Ukraine from reaching a consensus on several vital matters.
The situation on the ground remains volatile, with Russian strikes continuing to target various regions across Ukraine. Authorities have reported that at least eight people were killed and 69 others injured in the past day alone. Kyiv has also been under sustained drone attacks, and the country is navigating a shortage of US-made Patriot interceptor missiles.
As the conflict nears its fifth year, Ukrainian officials express growing concerns over the likelihood of further Russian attacks on their energy infrastructure, especially with the potential for intensified assaults during the winter months.
