South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump plans to shift his focus to North Korea following a deal with Iran. During a discussion with Trump at the G7 summit in France, Lee mentioned that the U.S. president expressed it was time to tackle the North Korean issue. Lee further highlighted that the effectiveness of sanctions on Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons program has waned.
Lee pointed out that North Korea’s increasing military ties with Russia, particularly in the context of the Ukraine conflict, have diminished the effectiveness of these international sanctions. He emphasized that even minimal support from Russia has a substantial impact on aiding North Korea.
Speculation about renewed diplomatic efforts with North Korea has been fueled by Trump sharing a photograph with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, harking back to their groundbreaking summit in Singapore in 2018.
North Korea continues to pose a significant security threat in East Asia due to its ongoing nuclear weapons development. The Korean Peninsula remains in a state of war since the Korean War (1950-53) concluded with an armistice rather than a formal peace treaty.
