Microsoft has united with some of the world’s most powerful technology companies to protect Anthropic from what the AI firm says is Pentagon retaliation for its public stance on AI safety, filing a court brief in a San Francisco federal court calling for a temporary restraining order. The brief argued that the Pentagon’s supply-chain risk designation threatens critical technology supply chains relied upon by national defense. Amazon, Google, Apple, and OpenAI have united with Microsoft through a separate joint filing, creating an unprecedented coalition of corporate protection.
The retaliation Anthropic describes began when the company refused to allow its Claude AI to be used for mass surveillance of US citizens or autonomous lethal weapons during a $200 million contract negotiation. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth applied the supply-chain risk designation following the breakdown of talks, triggering the cancellation of Anthropic’s government contracts. Anthropic filed two simultaneous lawsuits in California and Washington DC challenging the designation.
Microsoft’s unity with other tech giants is grounded in its direct integration of Anthropic’s technology into federal military systems and its participation in the Pentagon’s $9 billion cloud computing contract. Additional agreements with defense, intelligence, and civilian agencies deepen Microsoft’s stake. Microsoft publicly argued that responsible AI governance and national security required partnership between government and industry.
Anthropic’s court filings argued that the supply-chain risk designation was an unconstitutional act of ideological retaliation for its publicly stated AI safety positions. The company disclosed that it does not currently believe Claude is safe or reliable enough for lethal autonomous operations. The Pentagon’s technology chief publicly ruled out any possibility of renegotiation.
Congressional Democrats have separately written to the Pentagon demanding information about whether AI was involved in a strike in Iran that reportedly killed over 175 civilians at a school. Their inquiries are adding legislative urgency to an already extraordinary legal confrontation. Together, the unified protection offered by Microsoft and its industry partners, combined with congressional scrutiny, is creating an unprecedented shield around Anthropic and the principle that AI companies have the right to set ethical limits on their technology.
